Best Techno Cities in the World (2026): Clubs, Festivals and Where to Go
Discover top destinations for techno tourism, from Berlin to Buenos Aires. Explore iconic festivals, clubs, and thriving edm scenes worldwide.

The best techno cities in the world in 2026 are Berlin, Amsterdam, Tbilisi, London and Detroit, followed by Brussels and Ghent, Paris, Barcelona, New York, Tokyo, Ibiza and São Paulo. Berlin is still the techno capital of the world for the depth of its clubs and the length of its weekends, while Detroit is where the music was born.

Which city is the techno capital of the world?
Two cities claim the title, and both have a fair case. Detroit invented the music: Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, known as the Belleville Three, made the first techno records there in the 1980s, and artists such as Jeff Mills, Blake Baxter and Robert Hood followed. Our history of Detroit techno covers that story in detail.
Berlin, though, is where techno became a way of life. Tresor opened in March 1991, a few months after German reunification, and its label released those same Detroit artists. Few cities can match the number of dedicated clubs it keeps open every weekend, and on 14 March 2024 the German Commission for UNESCO added Berlin’s techno culture to the nationwide inventory of intangible cultural heritage (our report on the listing). So the short answer: Detroit is the birthplace, Berlin is the capital.
Best techno cities in Europe
Europe holds eight of our twelve places, so a two-city trip is easy to plan. In each city, the clubs are ordered by how central they are to the local scene, not by size.
Berlin, Germany

Berlin earns first place on stamina alone: parties start late on Friday and often finish on Monday morning. Our full Berlin club guide goes deeper; these are the four names to start with.
- Berghain: a former power plant near Ostbahnhof, open since 2004, with Berghain, Panorama Bar and Säule under one roof. Saturday’s Klubnacht starts at 23:59 and regularly runs into Monday. The door is famously selective and photos are banned.
- Tresor: opened on 13 March 1991 in the vaults of the former Wertheim department store and has been in the old Heizkraftwerk power station on Köpenicker Strasse since 2007. The basement floor is the techno room; the smaller OHM shares the same building.
- Sisyphos: a former dog biscuit factory in Rummelsburg with a large outdoor area. Parties run from Friday 22:00 to Monday 10:00 from spring until New Year, then the club takes a winter break until about early March. Entry is 21+.
- ://about blank: next to Ostkreuz station since 2010 and run as a workers’ cooperative, with several indoor floors and a garden that becomes an open-air floor in summer.
Closed: Watergate on the Spree held its last party on 31 December 2024, so older guides that still list it are out of date.
Festivals: CTM Festival fills ten days from 22 to 31 January 2027, and Berlin Atonal returns to Kraftwerk Berlin from 25 to 29 August 2027, with first tickets on sale in December 2026 according to the official site.
Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam has the best festival calendar on this list and a club scene that keeps moving into old industrial buildings on the edge of town. More options are in our Amsterdam nightlife guide.
- Shelter: the basement club under the A’DAM Toren, reached by the free ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal. It opened in 2016 and runs Friday and Saturday nights from 23:00, with house and techno at its core.
- RADION: a brutalist former dental academy in Nieuw-West, in use as a club since 2014. Resident Advisor lists a capacity of 1,500, and the main room runs on a rebuilt VOID system.
- Garage Noord: a former car repair shop in Amsterdam-Noord for about 400 people, open Friday and Saturday from 23:30 to 07:00, with the smaller Bar40 next door.
- Lofi: a former GVB bus garage on Basisweg with a warehouse room, a second floor and a courtyard. Resident Advisor lists a capacity of 2,000.
Closed: De School is marked closed on Resident Advisor.
Festivals: Amsterdam Dance Event runs from 21 to 25 October 2026 and is celebrating 30 years, according to the ADE website. DGTL returns to the NDSM Docklands from 26 to 28 March 2027, and Awakenings Festival takes place from 9 to 11 July 2027 in Hilvarenbeek, in the south of the country. Dekmantel’s 2027 dates in the Amsterdamse Bos are not out yet.
Tbilisi, Georgia
Few cities have risen faster over the past decade. The clubs are big, the sound leans hard, and nights start at midnight and often run past breakfast: KHIDI’s current listings end between 11:00 and 16:00. Photo bans are strict, and Bassiani asks you to register in advance.
- Bassiani: opened in 2014 inside the Dinamo Arena, the city’s largest stadium, with its main floor in a disused swimming pool. It holds around 1,200 people and has a second room, Horoom. Tickets go to members registered on the club’s website.
- KHIDI: under the Vakhushti Bagrationi Bridge on the right bank of the river, founded in 2016, with a capacity of 1,200 on Resident Advisor. The main KHIDI stage carries the harder programme, with residents such as Ancient Methods, while G2 leans towards house and local talent.
- Mtkvarze: a club since 2012 in a 1950s building on the left bank of the Mtkvari, with two rooms of house and techno. It marks its 14th anniversary on 23 October 2026.
- Left Bank: a younger club and community space in Chughureti, with two indoor floors and a courtyard.
London, United Kingdom

London’s strength is range: long house and techno sets in Farringdon, hard techno in Wapping and 24-hour parties in Canning Town, all in one weekend. Clubs close earlier than in Berlin, but the bookings are hard to beat. Our London nightclub guide lists more.
- fabric: opened on 29 October 1999 in the former Metropolitan Cold Stores opposite Smithfield Market. Three rooms, the bodysonic floor in Room One, and a 27th birthday weekend on 16 and 17 October 2026.
- FOLD: a former print works in Canning Town, opened on 18 August 2018 on an industrial estate chosen so the club could hold a 24-hour licence. Funktion-One in the main room and a no-photo policy.
- Phonox: one room and one Funktion-One system on Brixton Road since 2015, built around all-night and extended sets.
- E1: an independent 1,600-capacity club in Wapping, open since 2017, for techno and hard techno.
Festivals: Terminal V London comes to Drumsheds on Friday 23 October 2026, and Field Day returns to South London on Saturday 29 May 2027.
Brussels and Ghent, Belgium
Belgium punches well above its size, and its two key techno cities are a short train ride apart, so treat them as one trip. Brussels has the heritage, Ghent the warehouse energy.
- Fuse: in the Marolles since 1994, in a former 1925 cinema. Two rooms, a strict no-phone policy and 2026/27 residencies for Ben Klock and ÜBERKIKZ.
- C12: a club and art space by Brussels Central, run by the Deep in House collective, for 900 people. Luke Slater plays its Halloween night on 31 October.
- Kompass Klub: Ghent’s main techno club, reopened on 2 October 2026 on the former Vynckier factory site, its new permanent home.
Festivals: MODUL’AIR returns to Ghent on Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027. Our list of the top techno clubs in Belgium covers the rest of the country.
Paris, France
Paris built its reputation under a cinema and now adds open airs under the ring road in summer.
- Rex Club: beneath the Grand Rex cinema. Its electronic story began with a 1988 acid house night that brought Laurent Garnier over from Manchester, and it has been fully electronic since 1995. One room, 800 people.
- La Machine du Moulin Rouge: next to the Moulin Rouge in Pigalle, on the site of the old La Locomotive. The Central room holds more than 1,000 people; the Chaufferie downstairs, in the cabaret’s old boiler room, holds almost 400.
- Kilomètre25: an open-air club under the Boulevard Périphérique in the 19th arrondissement, open since June 2021. Its season runs from April to October.
Festival: Dream Nation, an indoor Halloween festival, takes place on 30 and 31 October 2026 at Parc des Expositions Paris Nord Villepinte.
Barcelona, Spain
Barcelona is a year-round club city, but it peaks in June, when Sónar and the parties around it take over. Our Barcelona nightclub guide has the wider list.
- INPUT High Fidelity Dance Club: inside Poble Espanyol on Montjuïc since 2016, a 645-capacity circular dancefloor wrapped by a 360-degree LED screen, on Funktion-One. Entry is 20+.
- Razzmatazz: five rooms across two former factories in Poblenou, open since December 2000, with a capacity of 3,000 on Resident Advisor.
- Nitsa: the Friday and Saturday club night in the main hall of Sala Apolo in Poble-sec. It started in 1993 and moved to Apolo in 1996; Boys Noize is booked for 23 October 2026.
Festival: Sónar, founded in 1994, returns from 17 to 19 June 2027, according to the official site.
Ibiza, Spain

Ibiza is a seasonal island rather than a city, and it leans towards house and tech house, but its two key clubs belong in any conversation about where techno is played best. The season runs from roughly May to mid October.
- DC-10: built as a bar beside the airport runway in 1989. Its partnership with Circoloco and the Monday parties began in 1999, and the 2026 season ends with the Circoloco closing on 12 October.
- Amnesia: opened in 1976 in a farmhouse near San Rafael, so 2026 was its 50th season. A terrace under an opening glass roof and a main room for a total of 3,800 people.
For the last weekends of the year, see our Ibiza closing parties guide.
Best cities for techno outside Europe
Detroit, United States

Detroit ranks fifth because its club scene is smaller than Berlin’s or London’s, not because it matters less. Go on Memorial Day weekend, when Movement fills Hart Plaza.
- TV Lounge: on Grand River Avenue, it calls itself the longest-running nightclub in the city, with an indoor room and a party patio.
- The Marble Bar: on Holden Street, with a ballroom and a covered patio on custom Void and AIS sound systems, and a programme of underground house and techno that includes a Techno Thursday on 22 October 2026.
Closed: Spot Lite is marked closed on Resident Advisor.
Festival: Movement has been held at Hart Plaza on Memorial Day weekend since 2006, following the Detroit Electronic Music Festival of 2000 to 2002. The 2027 edition runs from 29 to 31 May, and tickets are already on sale on the official site.
New York, United States
New York’s techno now lives mostly in Queens, in warehouses and former factories a short ride from the L train. Phone rules are strict.
- BASEMENT: under the Knockdown Center in Maspeth since 2019, with a capacity of 500. Fridays and Saturdays from 22:30 to 07:00, 21+, no photos and no phones on the dancefloor.
- Nowadays: a club and yard in Ridgewood whose Saturday Nonstop parties run from 22:00 to 22:00 on Sunday.
- Knockdown Center: a former glass factory from 1903, used as a venue for up to 4,400 people for big techno and house nights.
Festival: Time Warp USA takes over the Duggal Greenhouse and Agger Building in Brooklyn on 20 and 21 November 2026.
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo clubs care about sound more than almost anywhere. Bring photo ID: late-night entry is 20+.
- WOMB: in Maruyamacho, Shibuya, since 2000, with a 1,000-capacity main floor that rises as an atrium over three levels.
- VENT: a two-room basement club in Minami-Aoyama, open since 2016, built around flat-panel speakers by the Japanese company TAGUCHI.
- ZEROTOKYO: opened in 2023 on the basement floors of Tokyu Kabukicho Tower in Shinjuku, with a capacity of 1,500 and an Adamson system on every floor.
Festival: MUTEK.JP runs from 20 to 23 November 2026 at MoN Takanawa, closing with the world premiere of Richie Hawtin and Ali M. Demirel’s PLASTIKMAN | POLYPHONIC FERMENTATION, according to the festival.
São Paulo, Brazil
São Paulo has one of the strongest club cultures in South America, with long weekend sessions and big warehouse parties.
- D-EDGE: opened in 2003 in Barra Funda, a black box of LED light and sound designed by Muti Randolph with founder Renato Ratier. Capacity 1,000, and number 35 in the DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs 2026.
- Fabriketa: a 3,000-capacity warehouse in Brás for one-off parties, next with Trommel x Mixordia (Magda, Francesco Farfa) on 14 November 2026.
- Ephigenia: a 400-capacity two-storey penthouse on the Santa Ifigênia viaduct in the historic centre, with house and techno on Fridays.
Festival: Gop Tun Festival takes place on 9 and 10 April 2027.
Rio de Janeiro: D-EDGE also runs a sister club in Rio’s port district, D-EDGE Rio, with a capacity of 900. Our guide to the best techno clubs in Rio de Janeiro covers it alongside TRAUMA, Club 63 and the Botafogo listening bars.
Techno spots worth a detour
Two clubs and one festival outside the big twelve are worth a trip of their own:
- Robert Johnson, Offenbach am Main: next to Frankfurt since 1999, one upstairs room with a terrace, house and techno from 23:59 on selected weekends.
- Sub Club, Glasgow: a 410-capacity basement on Jamaica Street that opened on 1 April 1987 and is one of the longest-running underground dance clubs in the world.
- Time Warp, Mannheim: the original edition, running since 1994, returns to the Maimarkthalle on 3 April 2027, according to the organisers.
Germany also runs party trains and trams; see our guide to techno train and tram events. For single venues beyond these cities, our ranking of the best techno clubs in the world goes club by club.
FAQ
What is the best techno city in the world?
Berlin. It has the deepest weekly techno programme of any city, with clubs such as Berghain, Tresor, Sisyphos and ://about blank, and parties regularly run from Friday night to Monday morning. Amsterdam and Tbilisi are the strongest alternatives in 2026.
Which city is the techno capital of the world?
Berlin is usually called the techno capital of the world, and in March 2024 its techno culture was added to Germany’s nationwide inventory of intangible cultural heritage. Detroit is the birthplace of techno, where Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson made the first records in the 1980s.
What are the best techno cities in Europe?
Berlin, Amsterdam, Tbilisi and London lead, followed by Brussels and Ghent, Paris, Barcelona and Ibiza. Each has at least two specialist clubs with events listed for the current season.
Where was techno born?
Techno was born in Detroit in the 1980s. The Belleville Three, Juan Atkins, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson, are credited with creating the sound, and the city still hosts Movement at Hart Plaza every Memorial Day weekend; the next edition runs from 29 to 31 May 2027.
When is the best time of year for a techno city trip?
It depends on the city. Amsterdam peaks during ADE in October, Detroit on Memorial Day weekend in late May, Barcelona during Sónar in June and Ibiza between May and October. Berlin works all year, but Sisyphos closes for a winter break from New Year until about early March.
The TA view
For a first techno trip, Berlin between spring and New Year is still the safest bet, because that is when all four of its key clubs are open. If you already know Berlin, Tbilisi offers the most different weekend on this list. And if you can travel at short notice, ADE’s 30th edition starts in Amsterdam on 21 October.
