The Best Techno DJ Sets of All Time: 10 Sets That Made History

The best techno DJ sets of all time, from Jeff Mills at Liquid Room Tokyo in 1995 to Carl Cox's nine hour farewell at Space Ibiza, with the date, venue and recording for each.

Updated: October 2026

The best techno DJ sets of all time include Jeff Mills at Liquid Room Tokyo (1995), Derrick May at the Music Institute in Detroit (1988), Carl Cox’s nine hour farewell at Space Ibiza (2016), Plastikman at the Packard Plant (1994) and Nina Kraviz at Time Warp (2017). All ten sets on this list can be played on this page.

This Techno Airlines guide gives the date, the venue and the recording for each set, then adds three newer sets that keep coming up in the same conversation. The order is not a ranking. For performances built on hardware instead of records, read our separate list of the best techno live sets of all time.

What are the best techno DJ sets of all time?

The ten sets below were played between 1988 and 2018, in five countries, and every one of them survives as a recording you can hear today. The table puts the basic facts side by side.

Two entries are not DJ sets in the strict sense. Daft Punk at Coachella and Plastikman at the Packard Plant were live shows, and Daft Punk played house, not techno. Both stay on the list because DJs still describe them as the nights that changed what an electronic performance could look like.

Jeff Mills – Live At The Liquid Room | Tokyo (1995)

Jeff Mills recorded this set on 28 October 1995 at the Liquidroom in Tokyo, and it was released on 20 May 1996 by React and Sony Music Japan. Mills, a pioneer of Detroit techno known as “The Wizard”, is famous for working three turntables and a Roland TR-909 drum machine and for getting through up to 70 records in an hour.

The mix runs in three segments, and roughly half of the tracks are his own productions. Records stay in the mix for a minute or less, the crowd is audible throughout, and small mistakes were left in. The album reached number 45 on the UK compilation chart in June 1996, an unusual result for an uncompromising techno mix.

Its reputation has only grown. Mills toured a “Live at the Liquid Room” show in 2025 and 2026 to mark 30 years since the Tokyo night, playing from vinyl and reel to reel tape.

Derrick May – The Music Institute | Detroit (1988)

Derrick May was a resident DJ at the Music Institute, the downtown Detroit club that opened in 1988 and gave the city’s new music a home. The club served no alcohol and ran through the night, and its short life is the reason so much of early techno history is told through its dancefloor.

The recording here is a club tape of about 79 minutes, passed around by collectors and labelled 1988. The exact night is not documented, so treat the year as the tape’s label and not as a verified date. The tape captures the blend the club was known for, Chicago house next to the records May and his friends were making in Detroit, from the period of his own “Strings of Life” era sound as Rhythim Is Rhythim.

It matters because it is one of the few surviving documents of how techno sounded in the room where it first found a regular crowd, years before the genre split into the styles we know now.

Carl Cox – The Final Chapter | Space Ibiza (2016)

Carl Cox ended his “Music is Revolution” residency at Space Ibiza in September 2016 with a set that lasted nine hours. The season was billed as The Final Chapter, and it closed a run that had started in 2001. Space itself shut for good a few weeks later, and the building reopened in 2017 as Hï Ibiza.

The whole night was filmed by BE-AT.TV, and the video above runs for 9 hours and 15 minutes without a cut to another DJ. That length is the point: one DJ holding one room for a full working day, moving between house and techno as he did all through the residency.

Daft Punk – Coachella | Empire Polo Club (2006)

Daft Punk played Coachella on 29 April 2006, their first performance in the United States since 1997. It was the first time anyone saw the LED pyramid, and the duo performed a megamix of their own catalogue from inside it. The show became the Alive 2006/2007 tour, which ran for 48 dates.

No official film of the full Coachella set exists. The audio above is an audience recording, and the video below is Coachella’s own short film in which Ed Banger founder Busy P, who managed the duo at the time, looks back on the night. The tour’s official document is the album Alive 2007, which won the Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album in 2009.

Nina Kraviz – Time Warp | Mannheim (2017)

Nina Kraviz played Time Warp in Mannheim on 1 April 2017, and ARTE Concert filmed the full two hours. Time Warp has run since 1994 and fills the Maimarkthalle with around 40,000 people, which makes it the biggest indoor stage a techno DJ can be handed in Germany.

Kraviz, who runs the label трип, is known for acid records, odd tempos and sudden changes of mood, and she did not smooth that out for the big hall. It is one of the few complete, professionally filmed two hour techno sets from a festival of this size that is free to watch.

Time Warp returns to Mannheim on 3 and 4 April 2027. Dates and travel details are on our Time Warp 2027 page.

Charlotte de Witte – Tomorrowland | Belgium (2018)

Charlotte de Witte played Tomorrowland in July 2018, and the festival’s official 56 minute film of the set has been watched more than 28 million times as of October 2026. For a techno set with no pop edits, that number is the story: it introduced her sound to an audience far outside the genre.

The set is fast, stripped back and built around acid lines, the template she later took to her own label, KNTXT. In 2025 she opened and closed the Tomorrowland Mainstage on the same day, which we covered in our report from 2025.

Richie Hawtin (Plastikman) – The Packard Plant | Detroit (1994)

Richie Hawtin performed live as Plastikman at the Packard Plant in Detroit on 13 August 1994. The Packard was an abandoned car factory, and the parties Hawtin and his circle threw there are a large part of why Detroit techno is pictured in empty industrial buildings.

Hawtin had started the Plastikman project the year before with the single “Spastik” and the album Sheet One. This was a live set played on machines, not a DJ set, and no full recording has been released. The two minute clip above comes from Hawtin’s own channel and is the best public record of the night.

Its influence is on the minimal techno that followed, where the tension comes from what is left out.

Tale of Us – Afterlife | Ibiza (2017)

Tale of Us closed the 2017 season of their Afterlife night in Ibiza on 28 September 2017. Carmine Conte and Matteo Milleri had launched Afterlife as a party and a label only a year earlier, and 2017 was also the year they released their album Endless on Deutsche Grammophon.

The closing set is where the melodic techno sound that now fills arenas was still a club idea: long builds, minor key leads and very little talking. The official film above is short, and the full audio that used to circulate has been taken offline, so this is the entry on the list with the thinnest public record.

What came after is well documented. Afterlife moved to Hï Ibiza, Milleri started the Anyma project in 2021, and the duo have not performed together since January 2025.

Sven Väth – Sven’s 31st B-Day | Omen Club, Frankfurt (1995)

Sven Väth opened Omen in Frankfurt in 1988, at the age of 24, and it was his home club for the next ten years. He turned 31 on 26 October 1995, and the birthday set he played there a week later is a well known collector recording of German techno.

Two recordings are on this page. The SoundCloud player below is the birthday night itself, labelled 3 November 1995. The video above is a different night at the same club, New Year’s Eve 1995, and runs for 93 minutes. Heard together they show a resident DJ in the room he co-owned, at the point when Frankfurt was one of the centres of European techno. For where to dance today, see our guide to techno clubs.

Omen closed in 1998. The reasons Frankfurt mattered so much in those years are in our piece on why Germany leads the techno scene.

Adam Beyer – Awakenings Festival | Amsterdam (2016)

Adam Beyer played day one of Awakenings Festival 2016 at Spaarnwoude, the recreation area between Amsterdam and Haarlem where the festival was held at the time. Awakenings has organised techno events in the Netherlands since 1997, and Beyer, the founder of the Drumcode label, is one of the DJs most closely tied to it.

The official film above is a five minute cut of the day, and the clip below is a further excerpt. Beyer’s approach is the opposite of the Jeff Mills method at the top of this list: long blends and a groove that holds for minutes at a time, made for a festival field.

The festival now takes place in Hilvarenbeek. Our Awakenings Festival 2027 page has the dates, 9 to 11 July 2027.

Which newer DJ sets belong in the conversation?

Three sets from the streaming era come up again and again when people search for the best DJ sets ever: Solomun in Tulum, Amelie Lens at Awakenings and Charlotte de Witte on the Tomorrowland Main Stage. All three were filmed in full and published by the artist or the broadcaster.

Solomun, Boiler Room Tulum (2015)

Solomun’s two hour Boiler Room set from Tulum was published in March 2015 and had passed 76 million views by October 2026, the highest count of any set on this page. It is house and melodic house more than techno, and it is the set that turned the Boiler Room format into mass viewing. More picks from the series are in our list of the best Boiler Room sets.

Amelie Lens, Awakenings Festival (2019)

Amelie Lens played Area Y at Awakenings Festival in 2019, and the 75 minute film on her own channel is the clearest picture of the fast, rolling Belgian techno that took over festival stages at the end of the 2010s.

Charlotte de Witte, Tomorrowland Main Stage (2022)

Four years after the set higher up this page, Charlotte de Witte played an hour of techno on the Tomorrowland Main Stage in 2022, a stage that had belonged to big room and pop for most of its history. The film is on her own channel.

What is a DJ set, and how is it different from a live set?

A DJ set is a performance in which a DJ mixes recorded tracks, their own or other people’s, into one continuous piece of music. The craft is in the selection, the order and the blends between records, using turntables or digital players and a mixer.

A live set is different: the artist performs their own music on drum machines, synthesisers or a laptop, and can change the arrangement as it happens. Techno suits both. Its tracks have long intros and outros and a steady pulse, usually between 125 and 140 beats per minute, as our guide to techno BPM explains, so two records can run together for minutes.

What makes a DJ set one of the best of all time?

A DJ set earns that reputation when three things are true: a recording exists, other DJs cite it, and it changed something beyond the night itself. Mills changed how fast techno could be mixed. Cox closed a club and an era of Ibiza. Daft Punk changed stage production for every festival headliner after them.

We chose sets that meet those three tests and that readers can verify with their own ears. Dates, venues and running times were checked in October 2026 against the recordings and the official channels that host them. Where a detail is not documented, as with the exact night of the Derrick May tape, the text says so.

Where can you watch the best DJ sets online?

Most full DJ sets are free to watch on YouTube, on the channels of the broadcasters that filmed them. ARTE Concert films Time Warp, BE-AT.TV filmed the closing of Space, Boiler Room has streamed club sets since 2010, and Tomorrowland and Awakenings publish sets from their own stages. If the format is new to you, start with what a Boiler Room is.

Older sets survive as tapes. Collectors upload them to SoundCloud and YouTube, the sound is rougher, and uploads sometimes disappear, which is what happened to the Tale of Us audio that used to sit on this page.

Where can you see these DJs and festivals next?

Several of the festivals behind these sets already have 2027 dates in the Techno Airlines calendar. Line-ups are not confirmed for all of them, so check each page before you book.

Closer to now, our ADE 2026 tip list covers this month’s shows in Amsterdam, and the full calendar is in the techno festivals guide.

The TA view

The sets that last are the ones with a recording and a reason. Half of this list would be a rumour without a tape, a broadcast or a film crew, and the half that was filmed properly is the half people still argue about. That is also why the next entry on a list like this will probably come from a stream: the nights are no better than they were in 1988, but far more of them are being kept.

FAQ: the best DJ sets

What is the best techno set of all time?

There is no single agreed answer, but Jeff Mills’ Live at the Liquid Room, Tokyo is the set most often named. It was recorded on 28 October 1995, released on 20 May 1996 and is still used as the reference for fast, three deck techno mixing.

What is the longest DJ set on this list?

Carl Cox’s final set of his Music is Revolution residency at Space Ibiza in September 2016 is the longest. He played for nine hours, and the BE-AT.TV film of the night runs for 9 hours and 15 minutes.

What is the difference between a DJ set and a live set?

In a DJ set the artist mixes recorded tracks, their own or other people’s. In a live set the artist performs their own music on hardware or a laptop. On this list, Daft Punk at Coachella and Plastikman at the Packard Plant were live sets.

Where can I watch full techno DJ sets for free?

Full sets are free on YouTube on the channels of ARTE Concert, BE-AT.TV, Boiler Room, Tomorrowland and Awakenings, and on the artists’ own channels. Older club tapes from the 1980s and 1990s are mostly on SoundCloud and YouTube as collector uploads.

Which DJ set on this page has the most views?

Solomun’s Boiler Room set from Tulum has the most, with more than 76 million YouTube views as of October 2026. Charlotte de Witte’s Tomorrowland 2018 set follows with more than 28 million.
