A techno live set is not a DJ set. The artist plays their own material through hardware and software on stage, building and breaking the tracks in real time instead of mixing finished records. These twelve performances are the ones that defined what that looks like, listed in chronological order rather than ranked, each with the full video.
The distinction matters because it changes what you are watching. In a DJ set the skill is selection and transition. In a live set the skill is arrangement under pressure, which is why the same artist can sound completely different on two consecutive nights.
The best techno live sets of all time
1. Orbital, Glastonbury 1994
The Hartnoll brothers headlined the NME Stage on 25 June 1994, the first year Channel 4 broadcast Glastonbury live. Millions of people watched two men behind a rack of machines hold a field, and British festivals have booked electronic live acts as headliners ever since.
2. Daft Punk, Alive 2007
The pyramid tour rebuilt the duo’s catalogue from the parts up, re-sequencing hooks from across three albums into something that only existed on that stage. Almost twenty years on, the encore is still the reference point every large scale electronic live show gets measured against.
3. Floorplan, Boiler Room x Dekmantel 2015
Robert Hood plays his gospel leaning Floorplan alias live, looping vocal stabs over the kind of stripped minimal techno he invented in Detroit. It is one of the few Boiler Room sets that feels closer to a service than a party.
4. Surgeon, Dimensions Festival 2015
Filmed from inside the rig for Resident Advisor, this is the clearest look anyone has published at how a hardware live set actually works. Anthony Child improvises the whole thing, and the camera angle makes every decision legible in a way crowd footage never does.
5. Underworld, Glastonbury 2016
Twenty two years after Orbital, Underworld headlined the West Holts Stage on 24 June 2016 as a proper band, Karl Hyde out front with a microphone and Rick Smith assembling the arrangements behind him. The extended Born Slippy still works as a closing argument.
6. Blawan presents Kilner, Boiler Room Berlin 2017
Jamie Roberts took his modular project into a Berlin basement and let it run hot for an hour. Kilner is the point where his live rig stopped sounding like a studio experiment and started sounding like a room full of people.
7. Carl Craig presents Versus, Sonar 2017
Craig takes his own Detroit techno catalogue apart and rebuilds it for a synthesiser ensemble with players on stage. The Sonar recording is the cleanest document of a project that argues techno was always composed music.
8. Stephan Bodzin, Cercle at Piz Gloria 2018
Bodzin has performed live for his entire career, and Cercle put him in the revolving restaurant on top of the Schilthorn at close to 3,000 metres. Melodic techno performed rather than mixed, with the Bernese Alps turning slowly behind him.
9. Richie Hawtin, CLOSE 2019
CLOSE pointed the cameras at the hands instead of the crowd. Hawtin mixes, loops and processes in full view of the room, and the combined Glasgow, London and Tokyo film remains the strongest argument that electronic performers should show the work.
10. 999999999, Boiler Room Paris: Possession 2019
The Italian duo play everything live, which is why the acid lines wander off and the drums refuse to sit still. This is the set that pushed hard techno’s live wing back into the mainstream conversation.
11. Paul Kalkbrenner, Tomorrowland 2022
Kalkbrenner has said plainly that DJing was never for him, so he breaks his tracks into elements and reassembles them on stage instead. The Tomorrowland recording shows what that buys you: familiar material stretched, gutted and rebuilt for the crowd standing in front of him.
12. Anyma, Atomium Open Air 2025
The newest entry is also the most stripped back. Anyma’s touring show is built on enormous LED production, but for the Atomium on 17 May 2025 he played in front of the monument with no screens at all, which tells you something about where the format is heading.
How we chose these techno live sets
Three rules. The performance had to be genuinely live, meaning the artist was playing their own material through instruments rather than mixing other people’s records. A full recording had to exist on an official artist, festival or broadcaster channel, so the video will still be there in five years. And the set had to change something, either for the artist, the venue or the format itself.

Live acts still cluster around a handful of bookers. Dekmantel, Awakenings, Time Warp, Sonar and Cercle all programme live slots as a matter of policy rather than as a novelty, and Boiler Room keeps commissioning them.
