Gashouder Reopens in Amsterdam: A New Underground Level, and Only 7 of 49 Shows Are Dance
Gashouder reopened on 30 October 2026 with a new underground level and its own programme. Only 7 of 49 listed shows are dance, and four are already sold out. What changed, what is on and where Awakenings stands.

Gashouder reopened in Amsterdam on 30 October 2026 after a redevelopment that added a whole new level under the listed 1885 gasholder. It is also a different kind of venue now: it runs its own programme and booking team, and only 7 of the 49 shows on its agenda carry the dance tag. For a hall that became famous through Awakenings, that is the real story of the reopening.
What changed inside Gashouder?
Almost everything that changed is out of sight. The cloakrooms, visitor facilities, a lounge, a kitchen and the artist dressing rooms have moved to a new underground level, which also changes how you enter and move through the building. Upstairs, the steel structure, the circular shape and the raw industrial finish of the hall stay as they were.
The interiors are by Inside Outside, the Amsterdam studio founded by Petra Blaisse, with architectural groundwork by André van Stigt. Their principle was “Ruwbouw is Afbouw”, roughly “the shell is the finish”, so the sheet piling and columns from construction stay on show next to undulating aluminium walls and translucent polycarbonate.
By literally creating space beneath the building, we have been able to preserve Gashouder’s original character while introducing an entirely new experience.
That is Lennart Rottier, who leads the project as co-owner with Duncan Stutterheim, speaking to Decoded. The capacity is still more than 3,500. Mula opened the new era with DOMUS Live on 30 October, followed by two sold-out nights from The Opposites.
How much dance music is on the new programme?
We counted every show on the official agenda on 1 November, using the venue’s own category tags. Multi-night runs count as one listing.
Dance is the smallest category, but it is selling the fastest: four of its seven shows are already gone, against six of 31 live shows and one of 11 performances. The tags also undersell electronic music. Overmono, Bonobo, Orbital and Klangphonics are filed under live, and Sven Väth and Jon Hopkins under performance, as part of Harmony, a run of ceremonies from 17 to 22 November in which audiences listen from seats or mattresses in a 360-degree audiovisual hall.
Managing director Boye ‘t Lam says he wants a venue for “artists, disciplines and productions that don’t necessarily fit into one conventional category”. In April 2027 that means the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra playing Stravinsky’s Sacre in the same room.

What does this mean for Awakenings?
Awakenings helped rediscover the hall in the 1990s, and the venue credits it for that on its own history page. But there is no Awakenings night on the agenda as of 1 November, and Awakenings ADE 2026 ran in Halfweg. Gashouder’s own seven ADE shows, from Armin van Buuren to I Hate Models and Nico Moreno, were booked as a pre-opening instead. See our ADE 2026 recap for how that week went.
One caveat: Gashouder says it combines cultural programming with commercial events to stay independent, so promoter hires may not all be on the public agenda, and more could be announced. For now, this is what those old nights looked like:
The TA view
Gashouder has not turned its back on dance music, but it has stopped being defined by it. The sold-out numbers suggest the appetite is still there, and that a dance night here is now scarcer. If there is a show on this list you want, we would not wait.
Gashouder FAQ
When did Gashouder reopen?
Gashouder reopened on 30 October 2026, with Mula’s DOMUS Live as the first show of its new programme. The hall had been closed for redevelopment since January 2025, apart from a pre-opening season from 20 June to 24 October 2026.
What is the capacity of Gashouder Amsterdam?
Gashouder says it holds more than 3,500 visitors, which places it between Amsterdam’s traditional music venues and its larger concert arenas.
What is new at Gashouder?
A new underground level beneath the listed building now holds the cloakrooms, visitor facilities, a lounge, a kitchen and artist dressing rooms. The main hall above has been left largely as it was. The venue also now has its own programme and booking team.
Is Gashouder still a techno venue?
Dance music remains part of the programme, but it is no longer the core of it. Seven of the 49 shows listed on 1 November 2026 carry the dance tag, including KETTAMA and 999999999 with Charlie Sparks. Live, performance and art now sit alongside it.
Will Awakenings return to Gashouder?
No Awakenings event appears on the Gashouder agenda as of 1 November 2026, and Awakenings ADE 2026 took place in Halfweg. Neither side has announced a return that we could find. The venue also hosts commercial events, so the public agenda may not show everything.
How do I get to Gashouder?
Gashouder is at Klönneplein 1 in Cultuurpark Westergas. Take bus 21 from Amsterdam Centraal or tram 5 from Amsterdam Zuid to the Van Hallstraat/Westergasfabriek stop.
