EXIT Is Coming Home: Petrovaradin Fortress in July 2027, Full Return in 2028
EXIT confirmed on 29 October 2026 that it returns to Petrovaradin Fortress in July 2027 with a special edition, after Serbia's student-led opposition won the election. Full comeback in 2028. Dates, tickets and what is still unknown.

EXIT Festival is going back to Petrovaradin Fortress in July 2027. The Novi Sad festival confirmed its return on 29 October 2026, four days after Serbia’s student-led opposition won the parliamentary election that ended Aleksandar Vučić’s time in power. The 2027 edition is a one-off “special EXIT experience” at the Fortress, and the full-scale comeback is planned for 2028. Dates, line-up and tickets have not been announced. Here is what is confirmed, what is not, and how the festival got here.
What did EXIT announce on 29 October 2026?
The announcement went up on EXIT’s Instagram and on exitfest.org under the headline “Next year at the Fortress! EXIT is coming home!”. The key lines:
- July 2027 at the Fortress: “next July we will gather at the Fortress once again to celebrate freedom, unity and love together, with a special EXIT experience that we will reveal soon”.
- 2028 is the full comeback: “Our original plan was to return in 2028, as a comeback on the scale we envision requires at least 18 months of preparation.”
- Why it moved forward a year: “Thousands of incredible emails, messages, comments and an overwhelming amount of media attention have made one thing clear: you simply cannot wait that long, and neither can we!”
Founder and CEO Dušan Kovačević recalled the banners the team hung at the Fortress in July 2026, in the week EXIT would normally have taken place: “Students are winning” and “See you next year at the Fortress”. “At the time, elections had not even been called, the last remaining independent media outlets were facing the threat of being shut down, and my own brother was still in detention,” he said. “Today, EXIT is coming home.”
Why was EXIT out of Serbia in the first place?
EXIT started in 2000 as a student protest movement against Slobodan Milošević, so its position in the 2024-2026 protests was never really in doubt. After a concrete canopy collapsed at Novi Sad railway station on 1 November 2024, killing 16 people, students led the largest demonstrations Serbia had seen in decades. EXIT was the only major Serbian festival to back them publicly.
The cost came fast. In June 2025 the festival announced that the 2025 edition would be its last in Serbia, citing political, security and financial pressure, and in August it put a number on the damage: more than 1.5 million euros in public co-funding and government-controlled sponsorship withdrawn. The 10 to 13 July 2025 edition went ahead with around 70,000 people, Serbian artists who had been blacklisted for supporting the students on the bill, and Gala opening the Main Stage with the students, her 1996 hit “Freed from Desire” having become the protest anthem.

In November 2025, at ADE, EXIT presented “The First Chapter”, a touring year instead of a Fortress edition. By its own count, 2026 brought eight events in six countries: Sea Star in Umag, free festivals in Montenegro that drew 150,000 people, a stop in North Macedonia, and the finale, Starlight Festival at the Pyramids of Giza on 9 and 10 October, which sold out with visitors from 114 countries.
What happened in Serbia’s election?
Serbia voted on Sunday 25 October 2026 in a snap parliamentary election. The Student List, the party that grew out of the protest movement, took roughly 52.5 percent of the vote against about 39 percent for Vučić’s list, on a turnout close to 70 percent. Vučić, who had resigned as president in September to lead his party’s list, conceded on election night. Belgrade and Novi Sad turned into street parties; Belgrade club Drugstore captioned its stories “Raveland”.
Two days later Kovačević told IQ that “we said that EXIT will return when the freedom returns”, but that a festival of EXIT’s size “takes a lot of time” and that the team would decide “in the coming weeks” whether 2028 or “something in 2027” was possible. The answer came on the Thursday: both.

Why does the Fortress matter so much?
Petrovaradin is an 18th-century Austro-Hungarian fortress on the right bank of the Danube, facing Novi Sad across the river. EXIT uses the whole thing: the Main Stage sits in the lower town, and the Dance Arena, the techno stage that made the festival’s name, is built into a dry moat with the ramparts as walls. Sunrise over the moat with 20,000 people inside is the image most people carry away, and it is the reason “EXIT abroad” never quite worked as a replacement, however good the Pyramids looked.
For techno travellers the practical side is simple. Novi Sad is about an hour from Belgrade airport by car or shuttle, the fortress is a 25-minute walk from the city centre over the Varadin bridge, and the city has a club scene of its own. Belgrade’s No Sleep Festival, EXIT’s own winter techno weekend, is the other date to watch now that the brand is back in Serbia.
Our take
This is the right call, and the two-step plan is honest. A full EXIT needs the Dance Arena build, the international headliners booked a year ahead and the sponsorship the previous government took away, and none of that can be rebuilt in eight months. A smaller July 2027 edition keeps the date alive, gives the new government a visible cultural win and lets EXIT test whether the money is back. The risk is expectation: the first Fortress night after two years will sell on emotion, and the festival will need to be clear early about what “special experience” means in stages, capacity and price. Watch exitfest.org in November, which is when EXIT usually drops its first names.
