Kevin Brauer and Vintage Culture have released Selekta, their first official project together, out now on Affairs. The two-track EP pulls Jamaican sound system culture, London bass music and the weight of 1990s dance records into the same club-facing space.
The collaboration started remotely, with the pair trading ideas before finishing the material together in the studio. “Selekta” came first and was meant to stand alone. It was only once they began working on “Yoga” that the link between the two productions became clear enough to shape them into an EP.
Tuggawar Anchors the Title Track
The title track sits where electronic music, reggae and UK bassline meet. Its name comes from “selecta”, the term for the person picking and steering the music inside Jamaican sound system culture. Heavy low end and a tight groove carry that reference into a current club record rather than a period piece.
London rapper Tuggawar, whose roots are Jamaican, adds the other half of that connection. Brauer approached him directly through Instagram, and what started as a message ended up as the vocal at the centre of the track. His delivery is built into the production instead of sitting on top of a finished record as a guest feature.
‘Yoga’ Turns Back to the Nineties
“Yoga” goes the other way. It runs on a pulsating bassline, a loud lead and a driving groove, borrowing the scale of 1990s dance music while keeping the production firmly in the present.
That contrast is what gives the EP its shape. One track leans towards reggae and London bass culture, the other towards nineties nostalgia, and the dancefloor is the common ground. Both had already been tested across club and festival sets before the official release.
A First Chapter With More to Come
For Brauer, who spent years on festival stages as one half of Sevenn and put his name to “Boom” with Tiësto, the EP marks a phase built around club music without settling on a single genre. The sessions with Vintage Culture moved from remote exchanges to studio time and a seven-hour back-to-back set in Brazil, and both have left the door open for more.
