Rave Bae, Rail Rider, Kandi: A Rave Slang Dictionary for 2026
What does rave bae mean? A field guide to rave slang, from PLUR and kandi to rail riders, IDs and B2B sets, built on what readers actually search for.
Every scene builds a private language, and dance music has been at it since the first warehouse door was propped open. Some of these words are thirty years old. Some arrived last summer, fully formed, on a phone screen. One of them, rave bae, now sends more people to this site than most of our festival reports do, and until today we had nothing to give them.
So here is the dancefloor dictionary, starting with the term everyone is asking about.
The vocabulary is not evenly loved. Before readers land here, this is what they type, and one phrase does almost all of the work.
The people
Rave bae. The person you are hoping to find out there. Sometimes a partner, sometimes a friend made at four in the morning, sometimes just a stranger whose energy carries you through a set you were too tired for. The phrase spread through festival TikTok and stuck because the scene never had a word for that particular kind of company.
Rave fam. The small group you travel with, queue with and recover with. Chosen family, with a set time attached.
Rail rider. Whoever claims the front barrier before doors open and holds it for the whole night. Respect is mandatory. So is a water bottle.
Basshead. Someone who picks a lineup by the weight of the low end rather than the size of the name.
The kit and the rituals
Kandi. Pony bead bracelets, handmade and meant to be given away, usually traded through a handshake that spells out the four letters below.
PLUR. Peace, love, unity, respect. Born in the American rave scene of the nineties and still the closest thing a dancefloor has to a written code. We went deeper on it in PLUR, the heartbeat of rave culture.
Totem. The handmade sign on a pole that lets eight people find each other inside a crowd of eighty thousand. Check the festival rules first, because plenty of sites ban the pole and allow the sign.
Gloving. A light show performed with LEDs at the fingertips, usually one to one, usually close enough that only one person sees it properly.
The music
ID. A track nobody can name yet, either unreleased or deliberately unlabelled. Ask under the set video and forty people will guess.
B2B. Back to back. Two or more DJs sharing the booth and trading records. Our own search data says people look up specific pairings far more often than they look up the term itself.
The drop. The release after the build, and the moment the room stops being a room full of individuals.
Shuffle. The running man derived footwork that travelled out of Melbourne and became the default way to move at a festival, whether or not anyone can do it properly.
The Techno Airlines view: slang is the cheapest membership card a scene sells. You can learn the whole glossary in ten minutes, and none of it tells you whether the music is any good. What it does tell you is that people keep inventing new words for the same old feeling, which is standing in a dark room with strangers who are having exactly the night you are having. Rave bae is only the latest attempt, and it will not be the last.
