All About Aksak

Born in 1973 in Istanbul, Aksak says that his relationship with music began when he was 3-4 years old, listening to his father’s jazz and classical music records, according to the cover art. At the age of 8, he started going to classical music concerts, albeit with some difficulty, and at the age of 11, he started going to jazz concerts. In the same year (1984), he added making mix tapes and earning money to his musical experiences.

Aksak started his DJing experience in 1987, first playing at house parties and then at school parties, and had the chance to develop himself in the field of concerts and events during his university years. While studying at the University of Pennsylvania, he organized concerts ranging from Luscious Jackson to Run DMC, George Clinton to Wynton Marsalis, and even Cypress Hill.

In the same years, he shared the booth with DJs such as Josh Wink, Kind Britt, Robbie Tronco, and Louie Vega in Philadelphia and New York. Having had the chance to perform at the legendary Sound Factory Bar and Giant Steps, Aksak returned to Turkey as the music director of High End, one of the most important venues in Istanbul.

He started his residency adventure at 7th House and continued at venues such as Hakkasan, Frankie, and Minimuzikhol. The DJ, who took part in the establishment of Radio FG and Dinamo FM, has also been a radio programmer since 1998. From 2003 to 2018, he tried to accompany the stories of designers with his music at Istanbul, Shanghai, and Dusseldorf Fashion Weeks.

He was a Miller Music Factory instructor for two semesters and a jury member for three semesters. Aksak, who has enjoyed playing and sharing music for 33 years at dozens of festivals and hundreds of venues in many countries, especially in Turkey, continues to serve the industry in almost every field as the curator of Turkish Edits, the artist of Jeton Record, Bostan Plak, Papa Black Records, FOC Edits, Trndmsk and Soul Revue Records, and one of the founders of Life from Istanbul.

Describing his sets as “moody”, Aksak enjoys playing in a biting style that allows for different genres and unexpected turns, but always with funk, disco, and soul. Due to his tendency towards different genres, Aksak has the chance to play completely different sets for different audiences in different venues. He does not give up on his motto, “müzik paylaştıkça güzel” (Turkish), which means “music is beautiful when shared”.
