About Subway

Subway is a small music club in a basement under a residential building on Aachener Straße in Cologne's Belgian Quarter. Klaus Appelt founded it in a former brewery cold cellar as a jazz club, and the first concert took place on 4 December 1970. American jazz players such as Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey, Chet Baker and Dizzy Gillespie performed there, and from 1984 the WDR television series Jazz im Subway filmed concerts in the club. After a rebuild it reopened in 2002 with a new programme of bands and DJs in hip hop, electro and other styles, with DJs such as DJ Hell and Hans Nieswandt on Fridays and Saturdays. Jazz returned in 2008, and since 2013 the Subway Jazz Orchestra has played on Wednesdays, usually twice a month.
