About Open Ground

Open Ground is a club six metres underground in a converted bunker at Alte Freiheit 25, a two minute walk from Wuppertal's main train station. The entrance is down the stairs on the square behind Café 23, which sits above the club. It opened in December 2023, led by Markus Riedel, a former Hard Wax employee from Wuppertal, with Hard Wax founder Mark Ernestus, who played dub and reggae at the launch party.

The club has two rooms, both acoustically designed: Freifeld, the main room for about 400 people, and the smaller Annex, plus a central lobby with the main bar and a courtyard. Freifeld runs a custom Funktion-One system with Evo 6E loudspeakers and F132 subwoofers, and Funktion-One uses the club to test new models. The programme covers techno, house, dub, bass and electro, with guests such as DVS1, Marcel Dettmann, Theo Parrish and Surgeon, while Thursday Open Lobby nights give local DJs a free platform.
