For nearly two decades, fans have flocked to the Black Sea coast to experience the raw energy of minimal techno and house rhythms beneath the rising sun. Now, with a heavy heart, the organizers have announced that Romania’s edition of Sunwaves Festival will close after 18 remarkable years. From May 1 to May 6, 2025, SW35 will mark the final chapter at Mamaia Nord’s iconic Sunwaves Beach site. This is the last chance to join thousands of kindred spirits and carve new memories into the festival’s storied sands.

Since its debut in 2007 as a biannual gathering, Sunwaves has blossomed into a beacon for Ro-minimal culture. Like an underground ocean of sound, it has drawn both local enthusiasts and international heavyweights such as Ricardo Villalobos, Margaret Dygas, and Seth Troxler. Over the years, the festival expanded beyond Romania’s shores with editions in Spain, Zanzibar, and the UAE, but Mamaia Nord remained its beating heart, where sun-kissed stages and salt-tinged air became inseparable partners in celebration.

In an emotional Instagram post on April 28, 2025, the team confirmed that #SW35 would be their last Romania installment, citing circumstances beyond their control. Rather than dwell on reasons, they focused on gratitude for an incredible journey and pledged that the Sunwaves spirit will continue on new horizons. Fans can anticipate a spring 2026 edition in a fresh country, where respect, unity, and sonic innovation will once again take center stage.

This weekend’s final lineup promises an unforgettable send-off, featuring East End Dubs, Mason Collective, tINI and Raresh among many more. Attendees can expect sun-soaked sunrise sets and moonlit dance rituals that honor the festival’s legacy while setting a hopeful tone for what lies ahead beyond Romania’s borders.

As the sun sets on 18 years of Romanian gatherings, we celebrate the friendships forged, the pulsating beats, and the stories etched into these sandy shores. Though Mamaia Nord’s dunes will soon fall silent, the spirit of Sunwaves lives on in every pulse, every memory, and every future sunrise waiting to be written.
