What Is Burning Man? The Event Explained, with 2027 Dates
What Burning Man is and is not, when Burning Man 2027 takes place, where it happens, what the week looks like, the music, the cost and a short history.

Last updated: 23 October 2026
Burning Man is a week-long gathering of around 70,000 people who build a temporary city in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert every year in late August, live by ten principles, create art and music for each other and burn a giant wooden figure, the Man, on the Saturday night. It is not a festival in the usual sense: there are no headliners, no vendors and no spectators, and the organisers insist that everyone who attends is a participant. This explainer answers the questions first-timers ask most, from what actually happens to when Burning Man 2027 is and what it costs. For the full practical guide, see our Burning Man guide. Rewritten in October 2026.
Is Burning Man a festival?
Officially no. Burning Man Project, the non-profit that runs it, calls it an event and a community, and the difference is real. Nothing is sold inside Black Rock City except ice and coffee. There is no lineup. Every piece of art, every sound camp, every bar and every costume is brought by participants, and the ten principles, from radical self-reliance and gifting to leaving no trace, are the rules that replace a festival’s programme. For techno fans the practical consequence is that the music is everywhere and announced nowhere.
When is Burning Man 2027?
Burning Man always runs from the Sunday before Labor Day to Labor Day itself, so the 2027 event is expected to open on Sunday 29 August and close on Monday 6 September 2027. The organisation usually confirms dates and the art theme in the winter. The 2026 edition ran from 30 August to 7 September 2026 under the theme Axis Mundi.
Where is Burning Man?
On the playa, a dry lake bed in the Black Rock Desert about 190 kilometres north of Reno, Nevada. Black Rock City is built from scratch each year in a horseshoe around the Man, with streets named by clock position and letters, and dismantled completely afterwards. The nearest town, Gerlach, has a population of about a hundred.

What happens during the week?
- Sunday to Tuesday: the city fills up, camps build, art is installed on the open playa.
- Wednesday to Friday: the full programme of art, workshops, performances and parties, with sound camps running day and night.
- Saturday night: the Man burns, in front of most of the city, with fire dancers and art cars circling it.
- Sunday night: the Temple burns, in silence. For many people this is the real heart of the week.
- Monday: exodus, which can take six hours or more to leave the gate.
What music is played at Burning Man?
Electronic music dominates after dark, played from sound camps and art cars rather than stages. The most famous are Robot Heart, a bus with a sound system that hosts sunrise sets, Mayan Warrior, the Mexican art car, Opulent Temple, Playground, Distrikt and Duck Pond. Carl Cox, Solomun, Anyma, Lee Burridge, Diplo and Keinemusik have all played the playa, usually unannounced, and the sets that leak onto YouTube afterwards are some of the most watched in dance music.
How many people go, and who are they?
The permit allows about 80,000 people, and the city reached that in 2019. Attendance dipped afterwards, with tickets going unsold in 2024 and 2025 for the first time in over a decade, and the 2026 city was around 70,000. Burners come from every US state and more than a hundred countries; the stereotype of tech billionaires in air-conditioned camps is real but a small minority, and most people are in tents, vans or shared camps.

How much does Burning Man cost?
A main sale ticket has been in the 550 to 750 dollar range in recent years, plus a vehicle pass, with lower-income tickets and a small number of higher-priced tickets that subsidise them. The ticket is the cheap part: travel, camp fees, costumes, water and the equipment to survive a week in the desert typically add up to two or three times the ticket price. Our guide breaks down the ticket tiers and budget, and the festival packing list covers the kit.
A short history
Larry Harvey and Jerry James burned a two-and-a-half-metre wooden man on Baker Beach in San Francisco on the summer solstice of 1986 in front of about twenty people. The gathering moved to the Black Rock Desert in 1990, when the police stopped the beach burn, and grew into a city through the 1990s. The ten principles were written in 2004, the non-profit Burning Man Project took over in 2014, and Harvey died in 2018. The 2023 event made world news when rain turned the playa to mud and trapped the city for two days; the 2024 and 2025 editions ran without incident.
Burning Man FAQ
What is the point of Burning Man?
To build a city where the ten principles, from radical inclusion and gifting to participation and immediacy, replace money and spectatorship for a week. What people get out of it ranges from art and music to something closer to a pilgrimage.
Can anyone go to Burning Man?
Anyone with a ticket, a vehicle pass and the means to be self-reliant for a week in a desert with no water, shade or shops. Children are allowed; pets are not.
Is Burning Man a drug or sex festival?
Neither, officially: it is a community event with the same laws as the rest of Nevada and a visible police presence. What people do in their own camps is their business, which is true of every festival.
Are there regional Burning Man events?
Yes, more than seventy official regionals worldwide, including AfrikaBurn in South Africa, Nowhere in Spain and Midburn in Israel, run on the same principles at smaller scale.
The TA view
Burning Man is the only place in the world where Carl Cox plays to a crowd that did not come to see Carl Cox, and that is the best way to understand it. The music is extraordinary because nobody paid for it and nobody announced it. If you go for the DJs you will find them; if you go for the city you will find something harder to describe, and you will probably go back. Read the full guide before you buy a ticket.
