Burning Man (Black Rock City, NV, USA) 2027

Black Rock City rises in the Nevada desert from 29 August to 6 September 2027 for Burning Man, and the 2027 theme is Spellbound. The organisers describe it as a celebration of playa magic, from the serendipity of resonant coincidence to the awe of seeing things that cannot possibly be, and have framed the city as a bazaar of enchantments and a midway of magical delights.

Burning Man is not a conventional festival. There is no booked line up: the city is built by its participants, who bring the art, the mutant vehicles, the theme camps and the soundsystems. Art cars like Mayan Warrior and Robot Heart have made it one of the most documented electronic music environments in the world despite none of it being programmed centrally. The city stands for eight days and then disappears without a trace, which is the Leave No Trace principle at the heart of the ten that govern the event.

Preparation matters more than at any other event on the calendar. The organisers publish a Survival Guide and a Playa Primer covering water, shelter, dust and heat, and run a volunteer matching quiz for anyone wanting to join a city crew. Tickets are distributed through a series of sales rather than a single on sale, with updates through a dedicated mailing list. Reno is the nearest airport, around two hours away. It is less a music festival than a temporary city that happens to have the best soundsystems in the desert.
