Q&A Interview With DJ Rebekah (Rebekah Teasdale)
1. What inspires you the most in your life, and how do you incorporate these sources of inspiration into your creative process?
I love being in the mountains and nature. The space and sense of freedom often lead back to feeling free in the studio. It’s about balance — my mind needs peace to feed my soul and allow me to be creative.
2. What period or event in your artistic journey has had the most significant impact on you?
After many years of trying to control every little aspect of my life, I finally had the courage to stop drinking and taking drugs. This decision opened new territories, allowing me to mentally let go of my perfectionist streak. The moment I released all expectations was when the things I had desperately wanted or chased began to happen. You can have dreams, but the fun part is not knowing how they will unfold — it’s all about the journey and the experience of things coming together.
3. Which three words would you use to describe your life, and why?
Optimistic Solo Explorer! I navigate this world and its experiences alone, and I’ve fought hard to maintain my optimism. I’ve worked to shed negative beliefs, people, and environments along the way. Staying curious and open is essential for me as I grow older — to avoid becoming too comfortable or closed-minded, both musically and beyond.
4. Can you share some insights about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame them?
The biggest challenge has been learning to drop my ego, step out of my own way, and move past perfectionism and fear. I’ve had to stop caring about what others think. Their opinions can never be worse than what I’ve thought about myself, so making peace with my flaws and insecurities has been liberating. Plus, trying to predict what others think is often inaccurate and a waste of energy — it’s almost (probably) bordering on insanity!
5. How do you aim to interact and communicate with your audience or viewers through your life?
It’s all about sharing energy. I aim to connect with my audience on an energetic level through my sets, helping us transcend negative emotions and confront our demons through a “baptism of fire“. Maybe it’s a bit esoteric, but dance music has been one of my longest love affairs. It’s my anchor in life. I know my followers connect to this energy too, and many of them are open-minded to musical evolution. As the saying goes, if there’s one constant in life, it’s change.
6. How has your artistic approach or style evolved over time?
When I first started DJing, I always played what resonated with me. In my early 20s, I sold out by playing a style I kind of liked but wasn’t passionate about. It made me miserable and frustrated, so I vowed never to compromise my musical preferences again. Techno called me home. Over the years, I’ve carried this punk attitude with me, even as my music has evolved — becoming faster, more intense, and more industrial. Some textured techno elements have disappeared from my sets for now, but pushing sonic and energetic boundaries has been my focus for the past eight years.
7. Which of your works holds a special meaning for you, and why?
“Self-Destruct” remains one of my breakthrough tracks and holds a special place in my heart. It was the first track I created in under three hours, and everything fell into place. At the time, I had no idea Chris Liebing would sign it or that it would become so successful. For me, this track symbolizes pure creativity and freedom. It’s also humbling — you never know which of your tracks will be hits. I always encourage producers to make music they love rather than trying to meet label expectations by sounding like everyone else.
8. What are your thoughts on the role and impact of your life in society?
Honestly, I have no thoughts on this. Any perceived impact isn’t something I think about, as forming an opinion on this would stem from ego.
9. What does your creative process look like, and do you have any routines or rituals when working on a piece?
I often draw inspiration from movies or TV shows. A great speech or mood can spark my creativity, compelling me to capture it in a piece of music. On a more technical note, I like to start by building the breakdown first. This wasn’t always my approach, but it has become a defining part of my musical direction, which I find challenging and exciting.
10. What are some projects or goals you hope to achieve with your life in the future?
Musically, I aim to keep improving and following my heart in what brings me happiness. Personally, I want to continue growing spiritually, remain open to life’s experiences, and travel as much as possible. Seeing more of the world and meeting inspiring, passionate people along the way is something I deeply hope for.
