Interview With ZHU
ZHU exists in the space between sound and identity, where music becomes a world, emotion becomes texture, and creativity becomes a way of life.

ZHU has never been interested in following a straight line. From the moment NIGHTDAY quietly reshaped the landscape of electronic music, his work has been driven by atmosphere, anonymity, and emotional depth rather than spectacle. In this interview, ZHU reflects on the moments that defined his journey — from creative breakthroughs and personal loss to rebuilding, experimentation, and the evolving worlds he continues to create through music, film, and fashion.

1- What inspires you the most in your life, and how do you incorporate these sources of inspiration into your creative process?
“Ordinary people doing extraordinary things inspire me. Music is about people and for people. “
2- What period or event in your artistic journey has had the most significant impact on you?
“For the last album “Grace“, I directed a film about my own creative process. Watching it back gave me a completely different understanding of my own self and those around me. Making Generationwhy, which turned out to be a fan favorite for many, was over time a significant project for my sound.”

3- Which three words would you use to describe your life, and why?
“Energetic, Curious, Resilient. Energetic because I want to give 100% to what I focus on. Curious because life is full of mysteries and learning will never stop. Being interested is the best way to be interesting. Resilient because life is hard. To survive, you need to be persistent, consistent, and steady. Being resilient allows you to overcome the tough times which gives inspiration to make great times.”
4- Can you share some insights about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame them?
“This year 2025, has been a challenging year. A wildfire burned through my home earlier this year. I was rebuilding everything I had known this entire year. I made music in a van driving across different parts of the United States. I was rebuilding both my career and my house, at the same time. I needed to keep moving, keep making music, keep reconnecting with creatives from my past and new ones. While I was in the middle of overcoming my own challenges, I often did not realize the bigger picture and what I was preparing for next.”
5- How do you aim to interact and communicate with your audience or viewers through your life?
“I would say my music is a journey and full of texture. I aim to transport my fans into a different world, something they are not familiar with but also comfort them. My songs tell stories through sounds, emotions, words, and energy.”
6- How has your artistic approach or style evolved over time?
“I am a producer, a musician, a songwriter, vocalist, and much more. Each element has its own different purpose. My sounds are my world, my voice is an instrument, my words are stories, my production is the energy, and the music is the soul. Every element finds a new purpose on every new project.”
7- Which of your works holds a special meaning for you and why?
“NIGHTDAY is special to me because it was the first. It was the beginning and it catapulted me into the spotlight without me ever needing to step into any spotlight.”
8- What are your thoughts on the role and impact of your life in society?
“I hope that my legacy will carry on throughout my works and that people view what I have done as a roadmap to their own dreams and goals. To bring something new and original into the world is one of the biggest gifts an artist can contribute. “
9- What does your creative process look like, and do you have any routines or rituals when working on a piece?
“I try to capture lighting over and over again by combining things I’ve never heard before. Experimentation and discovery are both very important in this journey. And of course, keeping things simple is one of the best things an artist can do. Simplicity is underrated.”
10- What are some projects or goals you hope to achieve with your life in the future?
“I am on the verge of launching my first fashion line “NIGHTDAY.” What you wear reflects how you feel and says who you are. There are a few film projects brewing for release, and of course, I am always creating music. Overall, I want to keep pushing the boundaries creatively and bring different worlds together.”
