Bloc began in 2007, when George Hull and Alex Benson staged their first weekend at a Norfolk holiday park and quickly built a name as one of Britain’s most adventurous electronic music festival brands. The event grew fast, moving to Butlin’s in Minehead from 2009, where its mix of techno, house, bass and experimental live acts sold out year after year and drew a devoted following.
In 2012 the organisers attempted a major step up, relocating to London Pleasure Gardens with a capacity of around 30,000. The event was shut down on its opening night, 6 July 2012, amid overcrowding and crowd safety concerns, leaving thousands turned away and the company facing administration. Bloc paused through 2013 and 2014, then returned to Butlin’s Minehead in 2015 and 2016. The 2016 edition, with a bill that included Thom Yorke and Four Tet, was announced as the final Bloc Weekend.
For nearly a decade after that, Bloc existed only in memory. In March 2026 Hull confirmed the team would mark 20 years with a one-off reunion, and Resident Advisor lists a Bloc 20 Year Reunion for Saturday 6 March 2027 at a London warehouse still to be confirmed, with the lineup and tickets not yet released. The founders have redirected the old blocweekend.com address to their workspace and storage business, so a single reunion, rather than a full festival revival, is what fans can currently expect.
