A recent poll by Ipsos MORI for The Economist has uncovered unexpected attitudes towards nightclubs in the UK. The survey, conducted in early July, 2021, involved over 1,000 adults aged 16-75 and focused on various aspects of post-pandemic life, including the contentious issue of nightclub reopenings.

Key Findings:

  • 44% support reopening clubs one month after vaccination completion,
  • 30% prefer clubs to stay closed until the pandemic ends,
  • 26% advocate for permanent club closures.

Surprisingly, the 16-24 age group showed the strongest support for keeping clubs closed, while those aged 55-74 were more in favor of reopening. This generational divide challenges common assumptions about nightlife preferences across age groups.

The survey also touched on other pandemic-related topics:

  • Social distancing measures,
  • Travel restrictions,
  • Quarantine policies,
  • Mask usage.

An unexpected 19% of participants even suggested implementing a 10 P.M. curfew in UK cities.

“Freedom Day” and Its Aftermath

On July 19, dubbed “Freedom Day,” nightclubs reopened across the UK. However, this decision has led to a significant spike in COVID-19 cases, echoing concerns raised in the survey. The current situation has many worried about a potential return to earlier pandemic conditions.
