Burning Man 2026 Deaths: Three Attendees Die at the 40th Anniversary Burn
Three participants died at Burning Man 2026. What officials have confirmed about the deaths, the dust and rain gate closures, and how to stay safe on the playa.
Burning Man 2026 ended with an unusually heavy toll. Three participants died during the 40th anniversary gathering in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, which ran from 30 August to 7 September and drew around 70,000 people. Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen, who also acts as coroner, confirmed the third death as the city was packing up for Exodus.
How many people died at Burning Man 2026?
Three. “Although we average 1 death a year at the Festival, we have had two so far this year within the confines of the Festival and I have received information regarding a third who died in transit to a hospital in Reno,” Sheriff Allen said.
- Sampson Tshombe, in his mid-50s, had a medical emergency on Thursday 3 September. He was found on a city street, given CPR and pronounced dead at Rampart, the event’s temporary hospital.
- Armando Ramirez, 51, from Truckee, died in the early hours of Friday 4 September while being taken from the festival to Reno, according to the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
- Craigh Mann, 60, was found dead by campmates in his camp at around 3pm on Saturday 5 September.
What caused the deaths?
That is still unknown. Officials see no external signs of foul play, and autopsy and toxicology results are expected in six to eight weeks, so any talk of causes is guesswork for now. What is clear is that the week was physically hard. Gates closed on Thursday evening for wind and dust, then stayed shut for all of Friday after overnight rain turned the playa to mud, an echo of the 2023 washout. They reopened on Saturday, with reported queues of more than eight hours.
What should change for 2027?
Our take: three deaths in one week does not make Black Rock City reckless, but it should push Burning Man Project beyond condolence notes. A plain post-event medical summary, covering Rampart call volumes, heat cases and transport times to Reno, would help 2027 campers prepare with facts, not rumours.
Until then, the basics still save lives:
- Drink steadily and add electrolytes. Black Rock City sits around 1,190 metres above sea level, and dehydration builds quietly in dry heat.
- Learn where Rampart and the Ranger outposts are on day one, and agree daily check-ins with campmates.
- Pack extra prescription medication, because gate closures can hold you in or out for a day or more.
- If wet playa rules are called, stop driving and stay in camp.
