About Sundance NYE NYD (Waiheke Island (Auckland), New Zealand)
Sundance runs two linked events on Waiheke Island across the turn of the year: Sundance NYE on 31 December 2026 to close the year, and Sundance NYD on 1 January 2027 to open the next one. The pairing lets the organisers programme a late night and a day event rather than compressing both into one night.
Sundance has run as a festival brand in New Zealand since the early 2010s, publishing an official aftermovie for each edition including the limited capacity 2020 and 2021 events held under pandemic restrictions. Waiheke is the natural home for a summer day festival: the island is 40 minutes by ferry from downtown Auckland and spends the holidays full.
Tickets for both events are sold through Flicket, with the pairing available together. Ferries run frequently from Auckland’s Downtown Ferry Terminal with additional New Year sailings, and island accommodation books out early over the holidays. For a New Zealand New Year music festival that covers both sides of midnight, this is the format.
