R² Festival 2025: Where Techno Meets Tomorrow
R² Festival 2025 returned to Spaarnwoude with Reinier Zonneveld’s 10-hour live set, groundbreaking human-AI collaboration, and unforgettable performances from global techno artists, making it one of the most innovative electronic music events of the year.

On August 16, Spaarnwoude exploded into a pulsating playground of sound, light and pure adrenaline as Reinier Zonneveld’s R² Festival roared back for its electrifying second edition. Thousands of ravers gathered for a one-day celebration that pushed the boundaries of live electronic music, blending marathon sets, world-class talent, and futuristic production into an experience that felt both exhilarating and forward-looking.

A 10-hour Journey Without Exhaustion
At the heart of the festival was Zonneveld’s now-iconic 10-hour live set. While such a marathon might sound exhausting, many festival-goers described it as surprisingly dynamic. “It actually felt like several different sets,” said Bas Jansen, pointing to the constant rotation of DJs joining Zonneveld on stage. Another attendee highlighted how the freedom to move between stages kept the energy fresh, “It was super immersive but never overwhelming. And the collabs, like the one with Angerfirst, were such a cool extra touch.”

Standout Performances Beyond the Main Stage
Though Zonneveld was the centerpiece, other artists left lasting impressions. Bas named Restricted and SLVL as his personal highlights: “Restricted was a total surprise. I’d never seen him before, but he delivered big time. And SLVL, I’ve seen him multiple times, but he always kills it with his explosive style.”
For Loïs Althusius, the energy of Fantasm and Holy Priest was unforgettable.
“They gave everything to make the crowd go wild, and the visuals made the whole act next-level.”

The Human-AI Collaboration That Stole the Show
One of the most anticipated moments was Reinier Zonneveld’s back-to-back with his AI hologram, a world-first concept that has quickly become a defining feature of the festival. The crowd was captivated by how seamlessly the human and machine performances blended. “It was actually quite fun to watch,” Camila reflected. “It felt weird because it’s crazy to even think about what AI can achieve these days.”
The experience, however, felt distinctly different from a typical DJ duo. “With two human DJs, you feel the energy between them,” explained Loïs. “With the AI, it was more precise and calculated – almost ‘perfect.’ Impressive, but also a little uncanny.”
Camila admitted that at times, she couldn’t tell who was leading: “Yes, I couldn’t tell the difference sometimes, and that made it even more exciting.” The crowd’s reaction reflected that same mix of awe and disbelief. “The build-up was good and that drop gave energy to everyone,” she said.

A Visual Spectacle
If the music was the festival’s soul, the visuals were its heartbeat. From sweeping hologram projections to seamless lighting transitions, the production transformed the main stage into something cinematic.
“Some of the effects were so smooth it felt like magic happening right in front of us,”
Loïs recalled.

Beyond the Party
What set R² apart is not just its scale but its ambition. Zonneveld’s integration of AI isn’t a gimmick; it’s part of his ongoing work to explore technology’s role in the creative industries, a conversation he has taken as far as the European Parliament. At R², those ideas came alive in front of thousands, blurring the line between rave and research experiment.

The Verdict
If last year’s debut was about making history, this year’s R² Festival was about refining it. Between marathon performances, standout sets, and the now-iconic human vs AI collaboration, Spaarnwoude once again became the epicenter of electronic innovation. Or, as Camila summed it up in one word: “Outstanding.”
