1- What inspires you the most in your life, and how do you incorporate these sources of inspiration into your creative process?
Answer: “I find my biggest inspiration in silence. I rarely listen to music at home while doing something else because I have my best ideas when it’s very silent around me. I think the mind needs time and space to wander off, to let go. You can’t force it and you can’t hurry it, all the melodies are already there, I‘m just the one (if I’m lucky) to catch one and bed it into a track that is able to touch the listeners or triggers something on the dance floor. To be able to do that, I need to stop spamming my brain with information all the time.”
2- What period or event in your artistic journey has had the most significant impact on you?
Answer: “For my DJ career, I would definitely say my days as a resident DJ 15 years ago at legendary Rocker 33 in my hometown, Stuttgart. Playing warm-up for many big names back then, learning to read a very heterogeneous crowd, and digging all kinds of genres depending on the main act built a foundation for the wide spectrum of music I use nowadays to make people dance. I‘m very thankful for this school I went through and everyone who influenced me during this time, especially the guys from the local record store who took me by their hands and showed me all the good stuff.”
3- Which three words would you use to describe your life, and why?
Answer: “It’s actually hard to decide for the third word, so I’m gonna stick with these two: overwhelming and privileged. It’s overwhelming because I can tell that humans are not made to change places, time, and climate zones so often and meet so many people. The mind can hardly keep up with all these changes and impressions and too often I wake up in the morning not knowing in which country or even on which continent I am right now. Privileged because I was just incredibly lucky to be born with a nationality that allows me free and easy travel to almost everywhere in the world and into a family and surrounding that supported, encouraged but also criticized me in a way that I was able to develop myself as an artist and musician and make all those little steps throughout the last 20 years of my career that brought me to where I am now.”
4- Can you share some insights about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame them?
Answer: “To me personally, like for many others, the time of the pandemic was definitely a huge challenge. In the first month of not touring, I was kind of thankful that I had some time off for myself at home, but that quickly changed as I had to realize that not feeling like a part of my personality didn’t exist anymore or at least didn’t happen anymore. When everything went back to normal, and it was safe again to dance and celebrate together, I felt a huge relief and inner joy, and now, looking back, I’m thankful for that time because it showed me how fragile everything is we actually take for granted. It made me more grateful for every set I can play and every crowd waiting for me.”
5- How do you aim to interact and communicate with your audience or viewers throughout your life?
Answer: “Honestly, if I could, I would only interact with my audience via my music and my energy. I‘m rather not a man of big words nor of presenting myself on social media, and I feel that I can express myself best while DJing or releasing music that I produce in the studio. On the other hand, I learned that social media can also be a uniting tool to let people participate, e.g., in a party they couldn’t attend, but also online, I try to communicate via my music and not with too many words.”
6- How has your artistic approach or style evolved over time?
Answer: “I would say that it evolved in a way that I more and more see myself just as a catalyst for special moments and not so much as the centerpiece of these moments. A catalyst in chemical reactions enhances a reaction but it doesn’t change throughout the reaction, on the other hand the components amongst each other react with the catalysts help. So when people thank me after a great night, I often respond that they should thank themselves: a party can only be as good as the crowd allows, and I‘m just lucky to be able to be there to promote and enhance this beautiful reaction through my and other people’s music.”
7- Which of your works holds a special meaning for you and why?
Answer: “My track Mutter is very special to me, not only because it’s the German word for mother but because of how it changed our scene and somehow kicked off the comeback of trance music. Before releasing the track I got a lot of mixed feedback: some loved it, some thought it crossed a line it shouldn’t cross, still I was certain that it’s truly one of its kind, because it triggered listeners in very different ways. Mutter might have been the last big uniting crossover hit in our scene until today: it was played by Ben Klock, Solomun, Four Tet, Sven Väth, Freddy K, Gerd Janson, Kobosil, Nina Kraviz, and many more. Protagonists of very different subgenres at that moment could all agree on this track, and that’s something very memorable to me. Now it seems nearly unthinkable that a single track could fit in all these different settings.”
8- What are your thoughts on the role and impact of your life in society?
Answer: “Hopefully, making people happy.”
9- What does your creative process look like, and do you have any routines or rituals when working on a piece?
Answer: “Since I have an intense touring schedule, which results in being on the road all the time, I started to produce music in all kinds of situations on the road, mostly in the plane, during layovers, and at the hotel, but also on car drives, just whenever I can. I think that creativity is enhanced by limitation, so this limitation to only being able to use my Macbook and Air Pods Pro Gen 2 most of the time boils down to my producing process to finding catchy melodies and not losing myself too much into unnecessary stuff. In the end, for me, it‘s all about creative songwriting and having a strong core idea for a track.”
10- What are some projects or goals you hope to achieve with your life in the future?
Answer: “I know it’s a big one, but coming back to question seven, I would love to do one more crossover hit. A track that’s able to kind of unite our scene once again and spans the wide range of genres in a way that very different artists are able to play it.”
