Larry Sherman, who ran the Musical Products pressing plant, started it in the early 1980s, and Wikipedia gives 1984 as the founding year while noting that operations began in 1983.The label put out records that shaped the genre, including Adonis with No Way Back, Larry Heard's Can You Feel It, Marshall Jefferson's Move Your Body and Phuture's Acid Tracks. Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle also appeared on it. After years of legal disputes over rights and royalties, the label returned to releasing music and marked its 40th anniversary with a compilation in 2025. Trax is known in the scene as one of the original pressing houses of Chicago house.
