About SMAG Sundance Festival
SMAG Sundance Open Air Festival returns to the Baldeneysee in Essen on Saturday 10 July 2027, keeping the format that has made it a fixture of the Rhine Ruhr summer: one long day of house, techno and electro on the shore of the lake. Early bird tickets and early bird VIP tickets are already on sale through the festival website.
The Baldeneysee is the largest of the Ruhr reservoirs and sits in the south of Essen, close enough to the city for public transport but far enough out to feel like a day away from it. The festival builds its main stage facing the water, and the setting has carried the event through more than a decade of editions, with official aftermovies on the SMAG channel dating back to 2013.
SMAG itself is an Essen promoter that runs events through the year, including the Halloween Horror Dance at the Weststadthalle and the White Affairs series, and it uses a weekly newsletter to release ticket allocations and competitions for the region. The 2027 line-up has not been published. For visitors coming from outside the Ruhr, Essen main station connects to Duesseldorf, Dortmund and Cologne in under an hour, which makes this music festival an easy day trip without booking a hotel.
