Sam Blacky’s Interview With Techno Airlines (Full Q&A Format)
Q1: What inspires you the most in your life, and how do you incorporate these sources of inspiration into your creative process?
Answer: “Traveling inspires me the most. Hearing music in different countries and cities, stepping away from the chaotic life of a touring artist, and exploring new things out of fun and curiosity are incredibly enriching experiences.”
Q2: What period or event in your artistic journey has had the most significant impact on you?
Answer: “I think every breakup I’ve had has had a huge impact on my career. During these times, I feel liberated and free to focus on myself and my work, and it’s often when great things start happening for me. Besides that, my first ‘wow‘ moment was getting my song ‘Colombiana‘ signed to Repopulate Mars, which was always a huge goal of mine. Seeing DJs play that song from Ushuaia to Brooklyn Mirage and all over the world was insane. It was the first time I ever had that kind of impact.”
Q3: What three words would describe your life, and why?
Answer: “Chaotic, exhausting, beautiful.“
Q4: Can you share some insights about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame them?
Answer: “It took me years to be taken seriously as a DJ and even more years to be recognized as an artist and producer. I am 100% certain that my background in modeling made people think I was a joke or that I didn’t know what I was doing. It was as if two things couldn’t be true at once for a woman. I was even advised by my first managers to ‘delete any trace of your past as a model and never post anything like that again‘. It seems times are changing, and women can embrace many careers and identities now (thank God), but it certainly wasn’t like that for me.”
Q5: How do you aim to interact and communicate with your audience or viewers throughout your life?
Answer: “I am and always have been extremely active and, more importantly, honest on social media. I take people on my journey every day, whether it’s through shows, behind-the-scenes moments, my personal life, or even things as personal as how badly my period cramps are. I’ve shared my struggles with losing my mom, my journey with endometriosis, and my experiences with ketamine therapy for anxiety and depression. I’m truly an open book, and I like it that way.”
Q6: How has your artistic approach or style evolved over time?
Answer: “This answer could be turned into a book. The long and short of it is that it’s been a lot of trial and error. My tastes have changed, my music has changed, my style has changed — it’s a constantly evolving process.”
Q7: Which of your works holds a special meaning for you and why?
Answer: “They all do. Each of my works has led me to where I am today, but I am currently most proud of ‘Hotsteppa‘. We made that song over a year ago and fought tooth and nail to get it signed and released. I will never forget how unequivocally in love I was with that song the moment I heard the first draft. However, the most exciting work is my new remix of ‘Throw Some Ass‘ by Sofi Tukker. Tucker and I dated for a year, and we love each other very much. I even filmed as myself (an ex) for their music video ‘Hey Homie‘, a song that discusses the beauty in relationships that don’t work out but still have so much love in them. I am still extremely close friends with Tucker and Sophie, and I am honored to finally be working with them professionally. Remixing this song has been so fun, and I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
Q8: What are your thoughts on the role and impact of your life in society?
Answer: “This is a difficult question that I struggle with daily. I love my job; it’s my passion and brings me joy, but it also brings me sorrow. Being a touring DJ and artist for so many years as a woman makes me wonder what I’ve given up in the process. I want marriage, a family, kids, the white picket fence, and a happily ever after, but that’s hard to find when you spend your life on planes and performing on stage.”
Q9: What are some projects or goals you hope to achieve with your life in the future?
Answer: “I have too many goals to count. Some major ones include playing at Elrow, Ibiza, Coachella, Lollapalooza, Cercle, and other major festivals and collaborating with or playing with people like Black Coffee, Kienemusic, Peggy Gou, etc. I want to be named in DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs, as there are far too few females on that list. I would also love to refocus on my own record label, Stabby Records, where I self-released my first EP. I want to bring new artists onto the scene and start a skincare and healthcare brand, as those things are extremely important to me. There’s lots to do!”
