Exclusive Q&A Interview With Reinier Zonneveld
In an exclusive interview with Techno Airlines, Reinier Zonneveld discusses his inspirations, challenges, and the profound moments that have shaped his career.
1- What inspires you the most in your life, and how do you incorporate these sources of inspiration into your creative process?
Answer: “The environment around me always inspires me, from the enthusiasm of the crowd to the journey from my studio to playing onstage. Also, my background in classical music has inspired me to create my own melodies from an early age.”
2- What period or event in your artistic journey has had the most significant impact on you?
Answer: “When I fell in love with electronic music, a whole new world opened up to me. My experience began in my university days when a classmate asked me to a party he thought I would enjoy. I was immediately captivated by Richie Hawtin’s Minus set that night. I knew after watching him that my goal was to do music full-time. Also, last year I set a new Guinness World Record for the longest electronic music live set with original music only. I played continuously for 11 hours and 11 minutes on probably one of the worst weather days in the whole summer. The crowd and my loved ones around me really gave me the support to keep going and get out of my comfort zone. I will never forget that day, it was really special, and it was such a huge milestone in my career.”
3- Which three words would you use to describe your life, and why?
Answer: “Authentic, creative, and fast-paced. Being true to myself is a priority in both my music and how I make my own decisions. It affects all I do. That leads to creativity, which is fundamental to who I am and how I got to this point in my career. I’m always looking for new sounds and pushing the boundaries of my music. Lastly, I’d say fast-paced, as for the past years, I’ve been touring around the world while also working on producing music. Being on the go inspires me, and I enjoy being on the road doing something I love. I would not have it any other way.”
4- Can you share some insights about the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your career and how you overcame them?
Answer: “During university, when I decided to give music a try, I took out the highest loan I could get to spend on synthesizers. My family and friends were very supportive and I figured why not see where this goes and then decide if I’d go for a corporate job after my studies or not. At first, there was no cash coming in at all, and I had spent everything I could on my equipment and my label. But once gigs started coming in and I found my voice as an artist, then things took off very quickly, so all the challenges were worth it.”
5- How do you aim to interact and communicate with your audience or viewers throughout your life?
Answer: “I always play live, which gives me the opportunity to adapt each set to fit the particular vibe of the crowd as I play. The audience is the most crucial element, whether I’m doing a festival set or an all-nighter, establishing a connection with the crowd and feeling their mood throughout the various stages of the night is very important when you are playing live or trying out new track IDs, for example.”
6- How has your artistic approach or style evolved over time?
Answer: “When I first started playing and making music, I was still experimenting a lot, and my sound was way less polished than it is now. Also, in the past years, I’ve branched out into other genres beyond techno. For instance, in my latest album, “Heaven is Mad (For You)”, all tracks still sound like me, but they also have a more eclectic twist than in previous works I’ve released.”
7- Which of your works holds a special meaning for you and why?
Answer: “This year, I’ve been releasing a lot of new music on my own label, Filth on Acid. Some of my all-time favorite tracks I’ve put out recently are with my partner in crime, Kiki Solvej. She is an incredibly talented producer and vocalist and we always bounce ideas off each other that we always take later to the studio to materialize into new music. We tour together around the world and get a lot of inspiration from that and from being together, so I feel like each of our tracks always holds a special meaning. For example, ‘Time’, which we’re releasing this week, is something people would not necessarily expect from our tracks, but both Kiki and I are very daring in experimenting with new styles and sounds, so everything came together perfectly into a very beautiful and unique track.”
8- What are your thoughts on the role and impact of your life in society?
Answer: “I believe that music is a universal force that can unite people and be the ultimate form of self-expression. As an artist, I’d like to think I’m contributing to making people happy through my music. As an individual, I have found music to be the perfect outlet to unleash my creativity and inspire others to do the same. Also, by having my own label, Filth on Acid, my goal has always been to release music I believe in without restrictions while also supporting new musical talent.”
9- What does your creative process look like, and do you have any routines or rituals when working on a piece?
Answer: “Sometimes, inspiration for new music might come out spontaneously. If I’m able to go to the studio right away, I will do that. I have left dinners before just because I felt this sudden urge to make music, and once I enter that creative flow, I like making the most out of it, as then everything comes together really nicely. I don’t really have a strict routine, as I tour a lot, and that can also impact my free time around shows. Most of the free time I have back at home is often spent at the studio, though.”
10- What are some projects or goals you hope to achieve with your life in the future?
Answer: “There are still a lot of things I want to accomplish down the line. One of them is happening this August (2024), when I will be debuting my new AI model, R2, at my own festival in the Netherlands. This AI model has been trained on my entire music catalog in a way that it can play back-to-back with me as if I’d be playing a live set with myself. This has never been done before, so I’m really excited to show how it works and to incorporate this new tool into my live sets, as AI can give you so many new possibilities when playing live and producing music.”
