Force Inc.

Established in 1991 by Achim Szepanski in Frankfurt, Germany.

The label philosophy was essentially shaped by Underground Resistance, which always understood their work as a statement against the music industry dominated by major labels and also pointed out social grievances with their publications. From the beginning, Szepanski positioned the label as a politically motivated, socially critical, and intellectual antipole in the supposedly hedonistic techno scene. The label’s release policy was heavily geared towards musical innovations. Some of the first German publications in areas such as jungle, hardcore techno, and breakcore, are on Force Inc. or its sublabels. First, the distribution companies and sub-labels were closed, and finally, in 2011, the company announced its closure with its last production.

Rephlex

Established in 1991 by Aphex Twin and Grant-Wilson Claridge in Cornwall, Great Britain.

Early on it managed to perfectly balance waltzing in the unavoidably huge but welcome shadow of the major American cities without being totally slavish to their youthful legacies either. Synewave

Established in the mid-1990s by Damon Wild in New York City, U.S.

The journey that started in New York hosted hundreds of works in hypnotic and house styles. Works made in the ’90s often consisted of simple drums, pricking beats, and raspy sounds. Despite its decreasing production day by day, it still continues to produce singles or vinyls today. It is possible to see works by David Meiser, Fans of Function, Andrea Bulluzzi, and Jeff Mills.

Basic Channel

Established in 1993 by Moritz von Oswald and Mark Ernestus in Berlin, Germany.

The duo became known in the mid-1990s for a series of vinyl-only releases under various aliases marked by minimalism in both production techniques and graphic esthetics. Basic Channel is widely regarded as a pioneering force of minimal and dub techno. The minimalist esthetics of the 12″s released by the duo label can lead to ambiguities as to whether the names listed on releases are project names or just track release titles, meaning that appearances of those tracks on compilations or DJ mixes were often inconsistently credited.

Mosquito

Established in 1994 by Cristian Vogel and Si Begg in Brighton, UK.

A record company that produces works under the leadership of Ibrahim Alfa, one of the strongholds of UK techno sets. Together with Tresor Records, Alfa defines Britain’s frenzied techno scene with big names like Dave Tarrida, Neil Landstrumm, and Tobias Schmidt. Last year, they proved their existence in the digital world with their retrospective compilation album.

Downwards

Established in 1993 by Regis and Female in Birmingham, UK.

As label boss of Downwards Records, O’Connor (aka Regis), alongside his label-mate Surgeon (aka Anthony Child), was one of the originators of the Birmingham sound, forging a sound that blended Chicago house with darker European electronics. Although initially his plan was to take a “director of operations” role (he cites Daniel Miller as his greatest influence), O’Connor and his label partner Peter Sutton (aka Female) found it increasingly difficult to find artists to share their vision, and to this day still work with the same core artists.

Blueprint

Established in 1996 by James Ruskin and Richard Polson in London, UK.

The first few releases came in quick succession and immediately had an impact on the techno scene, during an era when dancefloor techno was suffering a drought of fresh artists. A chance meeting led to the second release on the label being Oliver Ho’s debut. Since then the artist roster has been largely centered around the work of those 3 artists, although Polson’s later contributions have been as one-half of The 65D Mavericks alongside his current production partner Nick Dunton. The surgeon has also made an appearance. Ruskin also runs Blueprint’s sublabel, Coda Records.

Sonic Groove

Established in 1995 by Frankie Bones, Heather Hart, and Adam X in New York City, U.S.

In 1995 Frankie and Adam along with newfound partner Heather Heart who was behind the legendary fanzine “Under One Sky” relocated their Brooklyn record shop under the big lights of New York City. Thus “Sonic Groove Records” was born. It was the dawn of a new era for the techno scene in NYC as the store was much easier to reach for many people now. Sonic Groove would move large quantities of techno vinyl releases throughout the globe which led them to become one of the most dominant forces in the industry. Established in 1993 by Russ Gabriel in Liss, UK.

Russ Gabriel is a name synonymous with the emergence of techno from the UK during the 90s, which encompassed labels such as Peacefrog, Soma, WARP, Rising High, SKAM, and Rephlex (amongst many others). As the owner of Ferox Records, he is first and foremost an electronic musician and composer, but in recent years has also turned filmmaker. With an approach, style, and sound that would not go amiss in the likes of Eglo or Sound Signature’s catalog, it is easy to underestimate the impact he had: his talents being called upon by the likes of Magnetic North, Djax, Planet E and Force Inc during his early career, more recently courted by the likes of Freerange, We Play House and Mobilee.
